Great Sandy Strait

Only a short drive from Maryborough is the sheltered waterway separating the mainland from Fraser Island is the Great Sandy Strait.

It is a marine wonderland - abundant with fish, dugong, turtles, dolphins, mangroves and seagrass pastures - and home to several rare and threatened species.

The Great Sandy Strait is a type of wetland unique in the world. Add to this crystal clear turquoise water and long stretches of white sand guarded by high sand dunes. Spend carefree hours bushwalking through native woodlands, heath and dense rainforest.

Dotted along the coastline of the Great Sandy Strait are the townships of Poona, Tuan, Boonooroo, Maaroom and Tinnanbar.

All retain that elusive 'old fishing village' character and charm and are popular holiday and fishing retreats.

The villages of Boonooroo and Maaroom have all-weather boat ramps with tidal access for fishing.

Accommodation options include self-contained units, caravan sites and camping facilities. Or hire a houseboat and enjoy the calm waters, passing dophins and the tranquility of miles of clean, calm peaceful waterways.
