Rum and Reef

Leaving Maryborough, travel north along the Bruce Highway. You will pass the historic towns of Howard and Childers. Howard offers several heritage buildings, a small museum of coal mining, war and farming memorabilia from the area and a few great swimming, fishing and picnic spots to enjoy on the Burrum River.

Continue north along the highway to Childers where you can enjoy many attractions throughout the National Trust Town, including wineries, the Palace Backpackers memorial and art gallery, along with many other museums and memorials. A short distance north from Childers is Apple Tree Creek, which is definitely worth a visit.

Take the Isis Highway towards Bundaberg. Here you will find a variety of attractions. Visit the turtles as they nest and hatch at nearby Mon Repos Beach from November till March. If you are looking for the ultimate escape, the Southern Great Barrier Reef Islands of Lady Musgrave and Lady Elliot are accessible from Bundaberg.
