Safe Driving Tips

  • Speed can cause accidents on Fraser Island. Please drive slowly, especially around bends, and give way to on-coming vehicles. Reversing bays can be found at regular intervals on many roads. The inland speed limit is 30 kilometres per hour.
  • Don’t overload the top of your 4WD — it can easily cause the vehicle to topple over.
  • When planning a self-drive trip to Fraser Island, be sure to consider the tides. The eastern beach at low tide is the quickest way to get along the island.
  • Regular road rules apply on 75 Mile Beach, with a maximum speed limit of 80 kilometres per hour. Watch out for creek drop-offs on the beach.

Guided Tours

One, two, and three-day escorted 4WD tours depart daily from Hervey Bay and Rainbow Beach. Tours also depart from major accommodation resorts on Fraser Island.

Air

Air charters and transfers to Fraser Island depart from Hervey Bay Airport. Fixed-wing aircraft can land on grass airstrips located across the island, or they can land on 75 Mile Beach at Happy Valley and Eurong. Helicopters can land at designated helipads around the island. All air charters and transfers should be pre-booked.

Water

Vehicular barges and passenger ferries operate regular services each day to various points on the island. Private boats can moor off the island with tender transfers to land, or there are jetty facilities dotted around the island’s shores.

Bookings are essential for all barges, except those leaving from Inskip Point, which generally operate continuously during daylight hours. There is no bridge to the island.
